Crime Mob “Knuck If You Buck” (Sea Things Remix, 2011)
Florida experimental beat conductor, Sea Things, has an ear for the delicate balance between structure and chaos. And his willingness to push on the outer boundaries of industrial dance, rap and noise makes this re-imagining of Crime Mob’s most enduring crunk hit a wild ride of digital glitch.
Unlike his work on last year’s ethereal, IDMwave document, See Thangs, the artist born Michael Floering transfers the aggression and menace of “Knuck If You Buck” to the world of electronic dance music by sending the source material through a digital meat grinder, often obliterating the sounds into white noise, but never completely disintegrating the source material. The resulting track retains the heaviness of Lil’ Jay’s bombastic production on the original, but replaces the 808s with acid bass drops and buzzsaw synths.
